World Youth Day 2008

Thousands of visitors are expected to swarm Sydney for World Youth Day 2008, including His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. I’m just so excited! World Youth Day is a day that celebrates the Catholic faith, and if it includes snazzy posters and smiling models then everything must be great, right?

In the interest of looking like I was doing work, I googled some lovely papal quotes. Enjoy.

“A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favour of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.”

Dn’t you just love the assumption of male as default? So, not only is abortion and euthanasia bad in the eyes of the Pope, anyone who votes for a candidate who has a pro-choice or pro-euthanasia stance is also bad.

Abortion has been around for thousands of years (All those Ancient Romans must be pretty charred by now) and was perfectly legal and accepted for most of ’em. It was only in the eighteenth and nineteenth century that abortion got political. Today the legality of abortion varies from country to country.

When abortion is criminalised women still grt abortions, often in dangerous ways. Banning abortion kills women.

In the eyes of the Catholic Church I’m worth less than a foetus. How nice.

“Selfishness and fear are at the root of (pro-abortion) legislation…We in the Church have a great struggle to defend life”

Why would fear be at the root of legislation giving women the right to be treated as human labelled as pro-abortion? It isn’t like there is a large group of powerful people trying to take control of our bodies away or anything.

“‘Rock’ [music]. . . is the expression of elemental passions, and at rock festivals it assumes a cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship. People are, so to speak, released from themselves by the experience of being part of a crowd and by the emotional shock of rhythm, noise, and special lighting effects. However, in the ecstasy of having all their defences torn down, the participants sink, as it were, beneath the elemental force of the universe.”

This is your top guy? Seriously?

“Although the particular inclination of the homosexual person is not a sin, it is more or less strong tendency ordered to an intrinsic moral evil, and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder.”

Translated: It is no longer cool to gay bash, but it’s still wrong to be homosekshual.

(Drat, I thought I was getting away with hiding those pesky horns of mine.)

“The fact that the church is convinced of not having the right to confer priestly ordination on women is now considered by some as irreconcilable with the European Constitution.”

Translation: Although we live in the 21st century, women need not apply for priesthood (or humanity).

This World Youth Day I think I’ll deny emergency contraception to rape victims to get into the true Catholic spirit. What are you going to do this World Youth Day to celebrate the Catholic Faith?

  1. Probably have pre-marital relations to celebrate! (Although I’m probably no longer part of the ‘youth’ in youth day). And is it just me, or is the name World Youth Day really geeky? I mean REALLY geeky!!!

  2. I don’t know if World Youth Day is geeky, it reminds me a lot of an out of touch teacher trying to be cool.

I think lots of lesbian sex, handing out contraception and strewing random feminist speeeches around will be a great way to celebrate.
