Today was a bit of a shocker. Bad news, more bad news and I ended up shoulder-charging some jerk who had a sexist t-shirt. The crowning moment? On ABC News I hear about a “murder/ suicide of a married couple.” Strike One: that makes it sound like they had a suicide pact. One person murdered the other person and then killed himself. As the story progresses it is revealed almost as an aside that there was a restraining order in place. Some police person testifies to “slight domestic violence problems.” You know, that trivial domestic violence stuff. The story concludes with what a tragic loss it is that two lives have been taken.

We need to assign blame. We can’t just close our eyes, stick our fingers in our ears and refuse to notice the patterns in our society. FFS.

  1. Slight domestic violence? Does murder qualify as “slight”?

  2. For every time a woman calls the police or takes out an AVO on her violent partner, will have been she has been bashed and intimidated many more times. Domestic violence is never ‘slight’, regardless of whether the cops have only been called once or 300 times and regardless of how slightly or how badly she was injured. There is always the inevitability of escalation and the possibility that next time is when he will really snap and murder her. The police need to take things like this more seriously.
