Le Chatelier’s principle states that:
If a chemical system at equilibrium experiences a change in concentration, temperature, volume, or partial pressure, then the equilibrium shifts to counter-act the imposed change.
Or according to Wikipedia:
Any change in status quo prompts an opposing reaction in the responding system.
This explains the notion of backlash quite well. Different mixtures in society make up groups that support or undermine patriarchy (and it sure as hell isn’t as clear cut as a chemical equation). The concentration of the substances may change with the temperature but the substances stay in equilibrium, which they’ve done for centuries now. Pushing against patriarchy and lifting the yoke is a valuable thing to do, something which I attempt to participate in every day, yet patriarchy keeps on pushing back.
Knocking the patriarchal system out of equilibrium is such a momentous task that it is almost beyond comprehension. The trick will be getting it to an end state that doesn’t suck. Technically nuclear holocaust is an end state. So is an airy-fairy post patriarchal world where the gender binary doesn’t exist. I choose the latter. The problem is getting there.
